i am interested in starting an e-business to escape my corporate confines. i have some money saved and would like to start figuring out what i need to accomplish this.
Simple question; ballpark, how much does this site cost to be built and be maintained. homage is for the kids i ask specifically about this site because i really like the way it is laid out and the simplicity of it. another question, would it be best to leave the maintenance of the site to a "web manager" (not sure of the correct word) or should i do the obvious and also learn how to maintain the site myself thanks in advance |

I'm in the process of having something similar built... Selling a small line of products, 10-15 items. I called local designers and their prices were WAY beyond my budget. Then I posted an ad on Craigslist, giving a brief description of what i was looking for, and specified that I wanted to spend a maximum of around $1500. I know some people on this forum would say that it's a bad move, I need to spend more than that to get the job done right, have good customer service, fraud protection etc. That's the budget I have to work with though. But, I got responses from 40-50 web designers from the ad. I got to look through a ton of portfolios and basically had my pick.
The company I decided to go with will charge around $2,000 for the whole project. A little beyond what I wanted to spend, but based on their work it seems worth it. Supposedly my business partner and I will be able to maintain the site (add new products etc) ourselves. They say that any computer illiterate person can do it. We'll see about that! |

I like to use elance.com to find web designers. There are providers on there that can fit into any budget. You can review their portfolios and see past work. I've had really good luck with elance.

That site would be very simple to build. I wouldn't imagine you couldn't build
something that simple for more than $1K. $2K is what I would spend max to get a great site done all of it outsourced and everything implemented. If you want large/customizable stuff like fancy databases, coding, applications, etc... you could still get it done fairly inexpensive b/c of the tools out there today like microsofts products, dreamweaver, and others Just my opinioin. Elance is a great place to get cheap labor and many will do a wonderful job. Just be very specific ni what you want an ddon't want Joe |

I used RentaCoder.com and I found a designer. He lives in Brazil and he has a huge resume and I'm getting a small web site project built for $500. The site doesn't involve a shopping cart so that saved me a bunch of money.
He's building it using open source. Basically he's going to do all the designing, and then I'm going to upload it to my Joomla account. By installing Joomla I can add/edit/delete content and change anything I want to. Alot of people use Joomla for their entire project but I felt the need to get a better designed site than what my skills could provide. |

CMK -
Do you have all of the source pictures, logos, and other things ready to go or would you need them to be designed? Do you have a domain and hosting already? Email? Depending on what you have 1-2g's is a fair price. I would be interested in taking on the site for you, PM me if you are interested. |

The shopping cart used there is Zen Cart | free shopping cart software which is free.
Most of the other pages appears to be part of the zen cart template. So that has saved you a lot of hassle ![]() Anyway, depending on how technical you feel, you can download and install it on windows or linux. I would suggest you have a play around with this regardless to get comfortable with it, and see what is in there. |
