If my goal is to get more backlinks, does it matter how I insert my url in my sig line?
Example: Ilovechucknorris.com - i love chuck norris Resources and Information. v I love Chuck Norris, and so should you (www.domain v. anchor link) Is one way better than another as far as backlinks go? ...Also, if I change out the links in my sig line, and the forum updates all my past posts with the new sig line link, then do I get backlinks from that? I hope this all makes sense! ![]() |

I think you are referring to anchor text or link labels. They definitely help (and hinder) with SEO. The links in my signature line help describe the domains I am linking to. If you use "click here" for the words to click on, you're telling people (and search engines) that the page is about the subject, "click here". You can use different anchor text for all of your links, but try to keep them all relevant and helpful for SEO.

Oh, and the second part of your question: Yeah, your signature copies to all previous posts, so (at 1200 posts) you'll get 1200 links. But remember 1200 links on the Fastlane forums aren't worth as much a 1 link on 1200 sites. Good luck.

Yes, the anchor text matters ... typically you want your keywords to resemble the anchor text.
For example, if you are linking to your vacation website you'd want "Vacation rentals" OVER "MyVacationRentalWebsite.com" Or, if you are posting on geo-specific areas, you'd want "Tahoe Vacation Rentals" as the anchor text. Typically, the value of the text is raised when it is placed on sites that are specific to the topic. For example, "Tahoe Summer Rentals" links placed on the Lake Tahoe Visitors Bureau website has more value than "Tahoe Summer Rentals" placed on the Fastlane forums.

Pay more attention to getting your links on high traffic, trusted sites.
If you sig has to do with the forum you are posting on, go for it. If not, I wouldn't do it. I don't want to sound discouraging. In order to succeed here you need to do things that deliver big results. A generic domain name and a temporary shot of paid traffic will do more for your rankings than 5 years of off topic sig links. (MSN/Live.com & probably Google are using site traffic data in their rankings. I'm getting sites on page 1 of Google for competitive terms without a single backlink.) |

yveskleinsky,
Try this... Download the "SEO For Firefox" plugin for Firefox. It will allow you to see PR (Page Rank) of a site in a Google search. The higher the page rank, the more authority it has. This should help you filter out lower ranking sites and improve your odds. Using your example, Google something like "Chuck Norris Fan Blog" and look at the results with SEO For Firefox activated. You will see "PR:?" along with a bunch of other info under each listing entry. Click on the "?" to get the page rank. Focus on the higher ones - 2+ over the 1's and 0's. Start leaving relevant comments on each blog with your backlink in your sig (Don't spam, a lot of comments are moderated, and it is just not cool). Under my sig, I use the http:\\myblogname.com format (even if they ask for a website that gets linked to your name when you submit the comment). I have never had a problem, as long as I add relevant info (or a question) to the conversation. Don't get too crazy though, just a few (3-4) a week. Bonus credits for .edu or .gov, they carry a higher authority over a .com (if it is really a Chuck Norris based site, I'm sure there has to be one college blog talking about him ) Hope this helps. Great info. I have been participating in content-relevant forums; I just needed to get straightened out if all backlinks and sig lines were created equal.
Thanks everyone! |
