Because I don't need any amateurs copying what I do and increasing my costs with their stupid attempt at placing Google ads ... I already have enough tools who come-and-go in my business. Also, I am bound by a confidentiality agreement at the moment. At some point down the road I will disclose them, assuming I am permitted to do so.

I wouldn't divulge any information about your sites, methods of promotion etc. There will be 100 people copying you exactly. I'm heavy into affiliate marketing and I won't even tell friends, account managers, no one... how I do what I do

+ 1

The second you post what your site is, thousands of little wannabepreneur kiddies will be copy/pasting it verbatim.

haha. exactly what my mom used to say to me. in high school when i was working for myself selling sportscards she always wanted me to go get a $5/hr job so I could "get experience."

After college when I became a professional poker player she would cut out ridiculous job ads from the paper that made $25,000/year so I could "have something to fall back on."

Great story MJ! I think many can relate to your blues and the mention of being groomed to something one doesn't believe in. Anyone who falls for that is a fool and a poor man walking because that's like being institutionalized. I'm talking from experience.

I agree with others, don't disclose the nature of your websites. Anyhow, when it comes to websites, wouldn't B2C provide more revenue since there are way more consumers than businesses?

MJ-
I read your story for the first timeon the RD site, and it was the power of your story that made me hop over here without hesitation. So, thank you- so much- for sharing your story. I suppose it is easy for me to think that others start at the finish line and that they have some sort of advantage. I really appreciate the honesty in your story, and reading it again couldn't have come at a better time for me. Thank you again. ...this is possibly a misuse of the dancing banana guy- but f#$% this guy is funny!

MJ

Thanks for the post. It is the first thing I have read and if the rest of the site is half as good I will receive an education beond my wildest imagination.

Also I could not find the other story on TL that has been talked about on here. The one By cantwait2. If you could post a link that would be great.

Sounds logical but B2C sites tend to operate on very low margin because the average joe american is very price sensitive. If they are shopping for WIDGET X, they'll buy it at the cheapest website that offers it. Even when there is differentiation, they still go cheapest (airlines for example) - avg joe takes the cheapest fare regardless of airline.

You ever run across her these days? I'll bet she's kicking herself if you have.

No, but I do keep in contact. She lives back in Chicago, is married with 2 kids. She was a wonderful gal, but our timing was not matched. I really don't blame her for leaving and getting discouraged.

Kinda reminds me of this woman I used to talk to on the Internet about Jeeps. She was in college and I was like 15 at the time. Fast-forward seven years (I was 21 or 22) and I see her online again, so I IM her. She doesn't remember me at first, until I tell her about the Jeeps and her in college, etc...she knows she knew me at some point because of that and it turns out now she's married and is having kids.

People change so fast!

I think every mother has this in her genes by default.

May be it is the need for security or the need for the man to be a provider (and if he is not working how is he providing?) that does it.

Couple summers back I was working a crappy job and decided to go to a bartending school on a whim since I got a feeling in my gut that it is something I'll like. I was taking lessons for the majority of the summer and having trouble finding a job since I had no bar experience. During this whole time I was getting "Go work at Mcdonalds!" type of suggestions. I knew that I wanted more than that and that my time was worth more as well, so I kept learning about bar business and applying to places (Also coming up with a good fake story of where I worked before). About a month later I was clearing $15 an hour without problems working as a bartend er around my college and loving it.. it didn't really feel like a job for the most part.

College was an experience that I wouldn't trade. It also teaches you discipline, self-motivation, and people skills. Those things aren't taught in classes. The problem with college is it gets you into debt - its almost a trap that forces you to get a job and start your trek on the endless spinning hampster wheel.

I was lucky and escaped.
I couldn’t agree more. I still use my degree slightly but probably will never use it again when looking out five years from now. I barely use it now for what I do. An architect that trades! Who would have thought?
However, it was a great experience as I met my wife, some of my best friends to date and networked with people I now do business with. I wouldn’t have changed a thing and would go again knowing what I know now if I was 18 yrs old.
