5 Life-Changing Ideas You Can Learn from Tiger Woods!
While watching Tiger Woods limp his way to victory in the US Open, I couldn’t help but extract some great life-changing themes that Tiger Woods can teach all of us, including myself. Some immediate Tigeresque strategies that come to mind:
1) The only enemy to victory is you.
Amidst a bum knee, Tiger found the resolve and fortitude to rise above the pain and cross the finish line, victorious. I have to ask myself … in that pain, would I have given up? When Rocco Mediate took the lead on the back nine, would your mind take over and surrender to the pain? The strong not only survive, they win. When your competitors are breathing down your neck, how do you respond? How would Tiger respond?
2) Focus on the end result, the goal, not the obstacles in your way.
Tiger focuses only on what it takes to be victorious. Why does it seem Tiger always makes the shot he needs to make? Several times during the US Open, Tiger needed to make shots to prolong the tournament. Each and every time a tournament changing shot graced the course, he delivered. Tiger focuses on the goal and the end result - winning - not the problems that lie in his way. Problems are challenges that need to be overcome and detoured. When they become roadblocks, you’ve lost.
3) Screw what anyone else says about you.
Other’s people’s opinions do not make your reality. How many people doubted Tiger’s ability to compete just fresh off surgery? How many said that he should skip the open? How many thought he’d bust in the 1 round playoff? Tiger don’t care. I’ll show them he says. People’s doubts in you, whether it be friends, family, or media, does not equate to who you are and what you can accomplish.
4) Winning isn’t easy and sacrifice is even harder.
Yes. Winning and being the top leader in your field isn’t easy, if it was, everyone would be at the top. As with highly successful people, success and winning has a price. Recognize the sacrifices these people make to be at the top of their game. Look in the mirror and ask yourself, “Do I sacrifice what I need to sacrifice to make my dreams real? Or do I take the easy way out and watch others realize their dreams.” If you’re a reality TV junky or a crazy sports fanatic that has to watch every game of your favorite team, these are some good indications that you’d rather sacrifice your dreams and watch others acheive theirs.
5) Focus on one thing only and kick ass at it.
Tiger Woods wouldn’t be any good at golf if he spread his interests around. He focuses on 1 thing and one thing only: Golf. Not tennis, not poker, not his small golf shop in Florida … one thing. He eats, sleeps, and shits GOLF. To hit the top of your game, business or otherwise, you have to eat, live, and shit your thing. If you’re dabbling in 10 different things, your results will be dabbling and unimpressive. Focus on 1 thing and do it in the most excellent way.
