Default Self publishing books
Can anyone recommend a printer for doing this that they have actually worked with? Yes, I can do a google search and have done so, but I am looking for actual experience.

I got about 100 copies printed of my auto racing book by Green Button: Green Button, Inc.

I don't have the actual quote on hand, but the book was about 130 pages long and the total amount was about $400. So basically on every book I charged $10 I made about $5. I found that it really took large sum of books to be ordered in order to profit a good amount.

But as far as Green Button, I researched almost every one of their competitors and they either had similar or high prices. Furthermore the people at Green Button that I spoke to were nice and helpful. The books shipped within about ten days of the order which is longer compared to book printers who are in business for speed. (Book Printing, Self Publishers, YOUR books printed in 2 days!), but you will receive a much higher bill which will shrink your profits.

The overall book quality was nice. Some of the front covers were a little bent which wasn't a huge concern because I just gave those to my extended family members. You can pick different page colors/weights which was cool because I opted for the heavier page even though it was a few more cents per book.

There are other book publishers out there who are much cheaper than Green Button but require you to have a minimum order of 2,000 books. I chose Green Button because of their rates and quality. Give them an e-mail and ask for a few sample copies they could mail you and then get a quote.

Good luck!

thanks, I called them today. They do max 500 books. My goal is an initial run of 1k min. They were very friendly and prompt and seem like a good short run option.

Anyone else?

I'm using Lulu, because they print on-demand. No inventory costs! I'll let you know how it goes by the end of next month!

thanks, I priced them, they are a little too steep. Almost $16 for a hardcover with a run of 3k. too high. I do not mind storing the books

i am looking at either 19.95 or 21.95 for the hardback version. I am going to presell at 14.95

I will be hitting you up for some tips on that side of things in the near future.

At $27.77, I thought it was an acceptable margin. I also assume the hardcover run will be more limited than the paperback (whose margin will be wider.)

I always thought LULU was on the high side too. But, I don't always mind paying for flexibility or convenience.

I thought your book was 17.77 skyler?

That's paperback, silly! And I've added some great content WORTH the $10!

I've got a publishing company and would be happy to supply a quote - I don't know if anyone in the forums has used us before (Dog Ear Publishing). What are your specs (trim size, page count, paperback or hardcover, etc)

ray,

I appreciate the thought, but this would be considered a spam post.

Ray, it is tough for new people to just show up and say "hey, that's my business and I can do that for you" in this forum. I think people will think of you and actually will refer you to others once they get to know you better here. Welcome to the forum and please feel free to post more about you in a new thread, introduce yourself here, contribute to the forum, and people here will be very welcoming and supportive.

Again, welcome aboard, and I'm looking forward to see your intro thread and to know more about you.

I don't have a specific printer for you, I would recommend finding a printing shop in your area as they will just deliver. I have self-published a book (for someone else), and we hired a graphic designer to lay out the book, they brought it to their printers who made plates for printing and voila....not sure how much of this is digitized now (this was 6-7 years ago).

Kurt, please let us know whom you go with & why....I'm currently writing a book and will be in your boat soon enought!

Also...I have a question....when you are ready to publish the book, do you need to have someone design your cover? or is that part of the publishing process? I'm really green in this area!

MsMoney,

I think I'm going to have a design contest (such as 99designs » Leading Designer Marketplace for Logo Designs and More… to get my cover designed.)

Bump -

Anyone else with personal experience w/ a publisher?
