I saw this program on CNBC (not MSNBC) a few minutes ago. I haven't watched it completely, but I thought you guys might be interested in the discussion. I found the link on HULU. I probably should wait to see what conclusion they come too, but at least if I post it now, I can't be accused of being politically biased (jk Russ )

Capitalism isn't dying, but entitlement and government size are growing at breakneck speed.

Those nullify the gains of many capitalists, and that capitalist, by their nature, is going to find a loophole, or some where else to do their business.

I agree that it's not dying. It is however being stunted at this time. I picked the title based on one of the comments found in the video. What you say about doing business somewhere else may be accurate as production of goods and services continue to be sent offshore. Hopefully, a way will be found to bring those jobs back and rebuild the economy.

Ronald Regan once said, "Government is not the solution it is the problem." When you have a society who believes that government is the solution, Capitalism is on a downhill slide.

I would actually say yes on that question. In sweden it is socialism that rules. We have entitlement programs for almost everything. Working in sweden is really stupid to be honest, because you can earn more by just getting grants from the goverment.

If you play your cards right in sweden you can get social grants (approx $600 a month doing nothing particular in return), you can recieve sick grants, you can recieve insurance grants. All of them requiring you only to send in a paper or two with some insurances that the information is correct. In sweden we have many people actually cheating on the insurance grants (many of them parents and normal families wanting to fill the coffers a little extra. Not because they need to, but because it is a simple fix).

The fun thing about sweden is that the goverment encourages entrepreneurialism in public, but stops it behind the curtains.

So, yes, if this "entitlement" crap continues (as I am certain it will), then capitalism will die. Even in the USA, the heart of capitalsim (once).

China seems to become the new Mecka for capitalism. That place seems to be hardcore on that.

Fanocks has the ultimate point. Capitalism is certain places may be stagnating or even dying. But capitalism itself will always be alive and well somewhere in the world. Capitalism is at the heart of the human spirit. Capitalism (being rewarded for risk taking) is what led Columbus to the New World. It spurred the California gold rush. As long as humans live on earth, capitalism will survive.

I believe that capitalism is NOT dying but is being restructured by the government. The government is forcing the reconstruction and the markets are reacting with uncertainty. In my opinion strict regulation is capitalism's #1 enemy.

Capitalism is alive in well in certain parts of the world, but you may need to expatriate.

There is an effort to KILL Capitalism, but true entrepreneurs will not let it happen to them.

If the intervention and regulations get too severe in the US , capitalists will just move their business to a more favorable area where they are not punished for successes or forced to distribute their wealth.

The thing is that capitalism isn't supposed to be restructured by the goverment, it is supposed to be restructured by the market itself (the free market). In a real capitalistic society the weak is removed and the strong live another day. If you mess up you are out. In a social system, you help the weak and good for nothing and crush the strong. I can't see the value in that.

A little government control of capitalism is needed, but its a fine line. IMHO the pendulim has recently swung a bit to far towards socialism.

China is hardly unregulated capitalism, its a gready military dicatorship. You can't do anything without the governments involvement.

In an ideal world the government would reign the capitalistic markets in a bit when they get to hot, to avoid crash's, and prop them up a bit when they slow down. Sort of act like a counter balance.

capitalism will never die unless killed by force. even in tight regulatory markets, capitalism thrives through black market trade. look at the drug trade. It is pure capitalism because the government has not tried to control it, only stop it. Yet it grows. You cannot kill capitalism as long as there are entrepreneurs.

Capitalism cannot be killed, only forced underground. In which case it usually become more profitable.

Capitalism is dying, maybe..... The American Dream is certainly breathing it's last few breaths... Seems like nobody even tries to get ahead anymore -- They just want to lay around and play the blame game... The few who are actually trying are finding out that their government no longer has any interest in them getting ahead. Holding people down has become a new industry in itself. And then you've got the people who blame "The Rich" for everything.... Asserting that it's only fair for us to commandeer a huge portion of their income so we can distribute it amongst ourselves.

When China and France look like a more favorable place to start a business -- You've got a problem!

Since this recession has affected the whole country and almost every sector, opportunities have never been so abundant. On the other hand the government hasn't been so business friendly especially with new regulations and other things. It all depends on the sector and business you will start up.

Good article on Yahoo Finance today, spells out what they say to be a "WAR ON CAPITALISM" going on in this country today:

This subject screams for a political response. Since I havent posted for months I will refrain myself...My biggest concern is that the lender(china) will call the loans due and begin collecting, at will, what belongs to them.(our entire economy) We have leveraged our freedom and our position in the world. We have become slaves to the lender. You may not yet see or hear the approaching of the owners coming to possess what is rightfully theirs, but that doesnt mean they are not coming. I wish I could say that we will survive and come out on top but it seems a daunting task with 3 more years to go. Maybe chopsticks and rice would be a good investment....Just a thought...

That would start a war. The main problem, and China should know this, is that there is nothing to collect. There is nothing backing the debt we owe them. Printing dollars into oblivion is not going to pay them back because of this. I am actually hoping they drop the dollar as the reserve currency to force discipline on us since we won't do it ourselves. That way China and our other lenders, provided they follow it's lead, can get the temporary recessions they would experience out of the way and then more quickly recover so they can move on with the prosperity their people so rightfully deserve.

Part of what is so sickening, is that free-market recessions do not affect the ENTIRE economy: only government-induced ones do. However, as you state, this is a blessing in disguise for people like us.
