Rusty weapons. Frayed carpet dotted with greasy chewing-gum spots. Ceiling tiles yellowed by water stains. For years, the visitor center at Pennsylvania's Gettysburg National Military Park looked less like a grand tribute to the 165,000 soldiers who fought there in 1863 than a building that 165,000 sloppy tourists had just tromped through. It was the kind of place that would inspire a kid to give that time-honored summer-vacation question a new twist: "Can we go yet?"

I read somewhere that something like 40% (it may have been less or even more) of the US population doesn't even know when the Civil War happened. Many think it was during the 1960's, referring to the civil rights movement. However, most could name the winner of last year's American Idol. Very sad. I also recently read that a landmark tree that oversaw the battle, was refuge to the sun for many soldiers, and that "listened" to Lincoln's famous address, was almost totally destroyed by a storm.

I went their a few years ago, it wasn't that bad. Its a fun place to visit, if you have seen the movie its quite good but give you no real appreciation for the ground.

Once you stand their and walk where they did you really can appreciate what they did.

Pickett's Charge was as you can see was over quite open ground, but you really don't feel how exposed you would be until you walk it yourself.
