Last night - I just could not sleep. It was one of those nights where I had far to much going on in my head regarding business action and ideas, dream homes and cars and I felt I just had to get it out of my system somehow and write down exactly what was going through me...

This is what I wrote:

I Phil of sleepless mind and exhausted body commit to achieving my life goals of:
· Building a commercially successful clothing company
· Building a skate park
· Owning my U.K Dream home
· Owning my dream car: Lamborghini Murcialago
· Competed in a Triathlon and slim and fit from the training.
· On my way to being rich for life
· On my way to a 2:1 Business and Entrepreneurship Degree from University
All within the next 12 months! This will all be complete by the 18th Feb 2010.
I am absolutely 1000000% certain I have the ability to do all of these things! There is no doubt in my mind that all of the above will be complete. I have had enough time to think and prepare for this stuff, reading books doing courses and various self help and wealth mastery programmes to help me. It’s about time I got clear and just went for it – swing for the fences, grab every single opportunity by the balls to take me there.
I DO NOT NEED ANOTHER SELF HELP PROGRAMME...
I NEED TO TAKE ACTION, ACTION, ACTION!
The most important thing to remember is that wasting time surfing eBay, on facebook, looking for clothes and lesser cars is just complete mental masturbation, counterproductive and kills my own dreams. This is always a step back for me. The time wasted is time I will never get back again!
I will no longer major in minor things or work from a task list. There is now only massive action to bring me closer to my goals. The only list I will ever work from over the next 12 months is my M.A.P massive action plan. I will always be doing something from here to bring me closer to my goals.
I MUST REMEMBER : that to get there doesn’t require killing yourself, just some action everyday.
The people who achieve are the people who want it most – and I want it more than anyone!
There will always be something to do to get me closer to my goals. ALWAYS!
I can fast track this success by following the same paths as other successful people.
Spending quality time with my girlfriend , friends, family and maintaining good relationships is of the upmost importance to me as I value this the most in life.
This is exactly what I want out of life> why should I settle for anything less?
Every day that passes I will work to making sure this happens.
Every day I will focus and dream about all of these things and also be thankful for all of the great things already in my life.
There are no ifs or buts this IS exactly what’s going to happen. I am as certain about this as I am about the sun rising tomorrow morning.
JUST DO IT
Buying the o.c California dream beach-view mansion is a 2011 objective

These are just my thoughts. I guess at the time I was just sick of feeling stagnant and nothing was happening. That is why I decreased the timescale dramatically to get a sense of urgency!

Its great to see you've got a surge of motivation. As everyone will tell you on this forum: it's Action (not ideas) that lead to success.

From personal experience, I'd be careful approaching your goal with this mentality. You might find yourself getting stuck in the same rut very easily. I've recently read Getting Things Done by David Allen and he suggests there are two main reasons why something doesn't get done (even if you are motivated to complete it).
  1. You haven't clearly defined what "done" means.
  2. You haven't identified a next action.
It might seem like a no brainer but conciously identifying the next action when it comes to daunting project like starting a business was a huge realisation for me.

An example: Recently I had set the goal to dry test a potential business idea I had with an inexpensive letter advertisement. For about 2 weeks I did nothing to complete this goal. Looking back, there was less than 4 hours of actual work to achieve this but why then did it take me several weeks to start?

The eventual thought process I went through to get started was:
  • I want to test a product ->
  • To test a product I need to create an advertisement ->
  • To create an advertisement I need to understand the legal/ethical requirements of dry testing ->
  • To understand the legal aspects I need to search for the relevant law ->
  • To find the law I need to go to Aust. Gov. Trade Practices Act website
While this is simple, the 2 weeks I did nothing I had not conciously realised why I felt paralysed, and I definately did not connect "lookup Trade Prac Act" with getting this project done.

It's great that you've got the big picture to keep you motivated. Unfortunately most goals in this picture are so complex that you subconciously go 'oh crap so much to do!' and end up doing nothing as a result.

Hope this helped

Phil-

I don't want to discourage you, but I too could make the identical MAP statements, and say "I will have achieved ALL of these things by tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!"

Saying it/writing it doesn't make it happen.

Also, look at the other massively successful people around you. Richard Branson comes to mind.

It took him DECADES to become massively successful.

My suggestion:

Instead of setting goals which are just an arbitrary date, why not outline a PLAN for how to get there, and set aggressive goals for each section? That way, if you are ahead, you'll know it-- and if it's taking longer, you'll know this right away.

You may want to start by doing the exercises in the PLAN thread.

For many, business/life success comes from determination, planning, execution, and being able to shift/change as your world changes.

It sounds like you're very determined-- time to start working on the other things!

I like this post. Looks like a real lightbulb moment.

I do find that once I've invested so much time & effort into *making* the money, it is harder for me to just spend it on frivilous things like cars and beach houses, etc... I think most successful people will be too tempted to reinvest their profits back into their businesses to exponentially increase profits for the future.

Cheers,

Wow, very aggressive goals! Looks like you've got your destinations all picked out ... now, you need to pick your roads that will get you there.

Like the others suggested, you need to start mapping out your FIRST steps and actions. I'd break down the task into their smallest components. All of these things are pretty long and arduous tasks,

For example "Build a successful clothing company"

What will it take to do so?
I see dozens of steps that will be needed to be done. You have to attack each as an action item.

1) Choose your brand.
2) Incorporate.
3) ....
4) ....
5) ...

Then each component item has its own sub-items. For example, "Incorporate" might consist of "Hire lawyer, file paperwork, determine which entity type, etc")

Will you keep us posted?

I applaud your effort and ambition!

Like others said, I'd outline a plan for each. That will help you determine priorities and then ACT.

Also, you might want to put these items together as a puzzle so to speak..

For instance, I assume your verbage of "building" equates to you want to do it to generate income, whereas, "owning' equates to, well, owning a toy or asset that is purchased off the income. You may determine that, as an example, the skate park will take a lot of time to develop and not spin off much income..thus it would be low priority..I guess I'm suggesting thinking about WHY are these your goals - and how do they piece together..

Thanks for all the reposnses, I didnt know what to expect I just felt like I had to get all those thoughts out somehow. Some really good advice in there.

jportz - I am definately going to have to read that book, sounds like a very accurate theory, I can relate to that a lot.

RUSSH - I can appreciate what you're saying. I think, that in my own mind if I have a looming deadline - it becomes more real. I felt that by placing these goal at realistic points in time they seemed too far off and unattainable. By bringing the date forward I felt more of an urgency to ACT. And since doing that I have been much more proactive and focused. I am currently working on my Plans and Maps. Thanks for the link!

hakrjak - This is something that I think about all the time. If I am in the financial position to be able to buy my dream house and car outright. But it is my investments and strict mindset that have got me to that point - will I spend the money or reinvest it??? I can't answer that now Im afraid.

PhxMJ - Thanks very much for that - I am currently working on my Plan as we speak. I'll keep you updated when I've finalised it.

Santago - Very good point, I had never actually though about prioritising the goals, I guess I picked the goals that seem the most attainable, then planned on moving on to the bigger stuff afterwards. I should really focus on the most lucrative businesses first. Afterall, to my knowledge There are more Lambo driving clothing company owners than there are skatepark owners

If you were interested - This is my clothing company

All constructive feedback is welcome

Thanks again for all of the input

Cheers

I am pretty sure, but may want to make it obvious that the opposite side of the shirts (like that the models are wearing) are blank. When I look at the shirts in the product page, I cannot see the opposite side of the shirt so am assuming that it is blank.

I totally did the design behind your logo throughout the website, especially the one with the skyline.

Its weird because I was dreaming about business solutions all the way up until this morning. I know thats the last thing I was researching or maybe it was the last thing I told myself I was going to take action on. But anyway, I hope thats trying to tell me something. Maybe thats my niche, solutions.
