Sticky Using The Reputation System - Reputation Speed
This is just a quick and dirty for those who are unfamiliar with Reputation on forums and some specifics for those who are familiar.

The last line of your User Postbit is your Reputation Speed. This will change and become more flattering as you gain Reputation.

Members may reward good posts by clicking on the Reputation Icon located under the poster's user data. This will allow you to increase their Reputation and also make comments on their posts.

As the forum sits, you may leave up to 10 Reputation bumps a day. I have set the 'spread' at just 3. This means that you must give Reputation to 3 others before you may rep them again. I hope to avoid members just bumping each other up for no reason. Any sort of manipulation of the system will eventually be noticed by myself as I read most every Rep comment almost every day. These quantities may change as the Forum grows.

The top speed is "200 mph"
The lowest is "Parked"

Reputation is soley based on your post quality. Your financial standing does not influence your Reputation Speed.

If you don't like your Reputation Speed, make better posts to encourage others to rep you higher.

Also, I personally give rep points to folks who start great threads. So you don't need to have answers to gain rep ... great questions are just as good as great answers.

I just today, disabled "Negative Reputation" as I don't want to create animosity among our participants as some of us have been pretty active in delving out negative rep points.

To view your reputation comments given by others, click on your User Control Panel.

That is under Quick Links
http://www.thefastlanetomillions.com/usercp.php

Again with everything around here, the terms of reputation, the levels, are subject to change as things move forward.

Cheers
MJ

Some other items to consider:

1) The more posts you have, the more "reputation power" you have to increase someone's rep speed.
2) The more reputation speed you have, the more "reputation power" you have to increase someone's rep speed.
3) You need at least 5 posts to add rep speed to someone.

There is no need for this. I can see this leading to post whoring. Which leads me to the:

2) The more reputation speed you have, the more "reputation power" you have to increase someone's rep speed.

This is exactly what should affect rep power. Nothing else.

3) You need at least 5 posts to add rep speed to someone.
The last one is good. Another thing to throw out there right now: Meaningless rep- circle jerking will not be tolerated. Going around and spreading points between a small group of people because you all love each other is lame. I am sure this forum will not have this problem because I know most of you are cool.

Negative rep power is necessary. There is a very strong need to call people out - and to have under radar doesn't mean that much. Now -255 under the radar sends a message. Do not worry about people giving out bad rep at first - it will work out if the posts are quality.

I agree with not having a "negative reputation" option. Imo, if you want to call someone out, do it as a post/response for everyone to see and respond to. Negative rep makes it too easy for someone to put down someone whose opinion they don't agree with.

In a forum like this, negative rep is not conducive to creating an atmosphere of free thought. Those who don't make decent posts or comments will just be "slower" than the others.

Ill attach a poll to get everyone's opinion.

Also, I'm experimenting with the rep icons -- please bear with me as they may seem to be changing.

Good ideas.

Playing the devil's advocate, I've been on forums where a poster did *fantastic* stuff and was loved by (almost) all.

But the person changed.

Got very negative and insulting, and accusatory.

Stopped helping.

And mostly criticized and pimped their own new "system"

Not that we have to worry about that ever happening here

For the above instance, I'd ask the poster what had happened to make them change so much

Try and get a little insight into what was going on.

*****

Another, greater, concern:

What if a group of idiots come here, make the minimum requirements for giving out rep points, and start slamming everyone else, and pimping up only their buddies' posts?

I think of the RD forums now. As much as I try and help some of those guys, I could see my rep being slammed down hard, as a large part of those forums are populated by conspiracy theorists, dreamers afraid of doing, and no-net-worth know-it-alls.

None of those folks is gonna like being told that they're not helping. So they all crap on the experienced investors, and, slowly, the good folks go away.

****

Any way of dealing with that last problem?

And BTW, MJ, you have my admiration and respect for taking this on. It's a HUGE job. And a sticky wicket!

Russ,

I understand your comments and I am for keeping negative rep OFF. As for the RD guys involved in conspiracy chats, dreamers, cocky no-net-worth know-it-alls == they would not last here assuming they bring it here with them. All the RD people here have been great.

I would be in favor of negative rep as long as it is seldom used. I'd prefer it if MJ could put some strict restrictions on it. For instance, not allowing it to be used more than once in a 24 hour period or something like that.

Nope, not really. My only critique would be that for each one or two-sentence post, we get a lot of white space because of all the graphics and such along the left side of the screen...speed, mood, picture, etc. Other than that, everything's great =)

Maybe just allow the site admin to hand out negative rep points where deemed appropriate? This would probably only be used in the most extreme cases.

I am in favor of keeping the negative turned off for the same reason already stated. You can get some jerk like babyeagle used to be that hates everyone & everything and slams everyone. Once that happens the entire system would be worthless. Just because someone posts a specific number of times does not mean they are helpful or serious posts. On the other hand I do see the risk of over indulgence in positive voting for those you think of as friends and building up their rate, but hey so what? We are here to learn and share so if someone gets a high rate quicker than you think they should or if you don't like there posts, just skip that persons post. be a grown up and use your common sense.

Thx Janet for feedback and others too.

FYI: BabyEagle would be banned here -- I'd give him 9 posts and then he'd be tossed. I already canned someone with a similar mindset who dragged himself in from the RD forum.

I am really amazed at well everyone gets along...maybe it is because we are all workig toward the same end. Increased Rep is great; I suppose decreased Rep would wake me up and let me know if I was way off track...Rep wouldn't be a pissing contest with those that are already here. The free exchange of quality ideas is why I'm here. I would take 0 rep any day of the week just to be a fly on the wall.

If you want to succeed, surround yourself with successful people. I feel privileged to be on this forum and quite frankly feel lucky that I found it. I think the rep speed is an fun idea. I have learned from other forums that if you stick around long enough you'll quickly learn who has quality information and who spreads manure. Or as others have referred to it as NNWKIA's.

It's pretty easy when you can pinpoint the majority as that...unfortunately.

Very true. This is why I like how this forum is moderated. When I was in the Navy, we use to have a saying. "Even the smallest of leaks if gone unchecked can sink a great ship."

Okay, I understand the rep speed bit.
What's up with the car assignment?
Is that based on the number of posts?

'Cause I see that I'm driving the same car
as some of the super members
and that just isn't right.

The vehicle you are "in" is soley based on post count. You start driving more luxurious (And faster) autos as your post count increases.
